Riluzole (sold under the brand name Rilutek) is a medication used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It is not a cure for ALS, but it is intended to help slow the progression of the disease. Primary Uses Extending Survival: Clinical studies have shown that Rilutek can extend survival for patients with ALS, defined as being alive and not requiring a tracheotomy or mechanical ventilation. Delaying Ventilation: It may delay the time until a patient needs a breathing tube or mechanical ventilation.
